A Cottage of Content

Finding a gem of a country pub

I have family links to the beautiful English county of Herefordshire, and frequently visit exploring the rural countryside and, local country pubs.

One such pub is the Kilpeck Inn which was saved from development into residential property about 10 years ago. It’s now well known for its food and seems to be very popular. However, it doesn’t seem to cater quite so well for the locals who want to go there for a pint or two and socialise. So although they do stock good beer it is very much all about the food.

Fabulous atmosphere, food and beer, the excellent Cottage of Content at Carey, Herefordshire

The very good Cottage of Content Pub

I have eaten there a number of times over the last 10 years and had very mixed experiences which has put me off a little. A memorable occasion being a very overpriced steak that was served on a piece of wood with a small metal basket of chips. However I have not eaten there in the last couple of years and I am sure it is now much improved as the car park does tend to be reasonably full when I pass there in the evening.

My last visit to the area this weekend and we decided to try out the Cottage of Content pub in the hamlet of Carey. All I can say is wow!

The Cottage of Content

Its a fabulously quaint small traditional pub and serves very good beer. We were made to feel very welcome as we settled at our table and scanned the menu. You always know you are on to a good thing when you look through the menu and struggle to narrow your shortlist down as it all sounds delicious. All the choices were not your standard pub fayre with the chef adding his/her skill and imagination to the presentation and flavour combinations.  What’s even better is that when the food comes out you don’t look at your eating companions dishes and feel short changed on your own. They were all beautifully presented and very delicious.

We all had a selection of starters, mains and desserts and none of us were disappointed. Peace descended over the table as the cutlery was put to good use with the frequent break in silence caused by the contented sounds of food being thoroughly enjoyed.

We loved the Cottage of Content and will very much look forward to our next visit. So if you are in the Hereford area, do look it up and I’m sure you (like us) won’t be disappointed.
